The idea for the Simcoe 75 & 75HW came in 2018, on a trip to Florida.

We were in Florida on a family vacation, and since we'd come all that way, we decided to go fishing! I went to Lake Seminole, a lake famous for bass fishing.

That experience is what drove the development of the Simcoe.

The atmosphere on Lake Seminole was perfect, and I was totally fired up!

The bass boat racing through the standing timber looked like a picture.

But the fishing ended in a complete shutout.

I drove more than 4,000km round trip and didn't catch a single fish. One of the worst fishing trips of my life.

Not a single bite on Lake Seminole, despite its amazing atmosphere. I was desperate to figure out how to catch bass in that lake, and that's how I came up with this lure.

I had no clue at all, so I didn't even know what kind of lure to make.

What do the bass in this lake mainly eat?

Shad?

Then let's make a lure that imitates shad!

I started building this lure from that very simple, straightforward idea.

So we reproduced the look and feel of a shad as faithfully as possible.

Shad are surprisingly thin fish, so the Simcoe has a thin body too!

Most lipless crankbaits have a flat face on the head that catches the water and creates vibration. The Simcoe does the exact opposite.

Its back is pointed, so instead of catching the water, it slices through it to create vibration.

At first we called this lure the Seminole, after the lake where the idea was born. But it felt too strange for a tiny lure maker in Ontario, Canada, to name a lure after a lake in Florida. During development, one prototype turned out to be very effective for ice fishing on Lake Simcoe, a lake in Ontario, so we renamed it Simcoe and kept going.

The Simcoe was probably the second most difficult lure to develop in NLW's history (the first was the Erie 115MD).

With a lipless crankbait, the slightest change in body shape, line-tie position or weighting can dramatically change its performance, so we went through countless prototypes.

Unlike crankbaits and minnows, a lipless crank can't be tuned with the lip. We had to adjust the body shape and the line-tie position again and again, in 0.1mm steps, before we finally got it right.

Anyway, the struggles don't matter. As we kept developing the Simcoe 75 & 75HW, we saw more and more possibilities, and the lure kept evolving.

One result is the two line-tie positions.

For details, please watch the video, but each line tie has its own characteristics, so a single lure can cover many situations and techniques.

Another result is the two weights.

The body shape is exactly the same, in two models: the original at 16.1g and the heavyweight at 24.1g.

The two weights greatly widen where you can fish it, including very deep water.

For example, with Great Lakes smallmouth, once the fish move deep, very few lures (especially hard baits) still work. The Simcoe easily reaches 10 or 15m, where other hard baits can't go.

Even lake trout at 20 meters are well within range.

I haven't tried it because there's no ocean in Ontario, but I'm sure there are situations where it works in saltwater too.

And of course, the basics of a lipless crank, casting and retrieving, have been refined to the limit, so you can use it with confidence.

So that's the Simcoe 75 & 75HW.

They are available now at SAMURAI FISHING MARCHE.

Give our lipless cranks a try: they're one of the few lures that can still catch fish when the season gets tough.
