The fish-attracting power of the Drill Roll.

At first glance, the Otonabee 48 may look like a rather unusual lure — a bait with action-generating elements at both the front and the rear.

But this unique design is exactly what gives it its outstanding swimming performance.

The Otonabee 48 is capable of swimming with an ultra high-pitch action, almost like a lipless crankbait, yet in a compact minnow profile. The action generated by the front lip is further accelerated by NLW’s proprietary Tail Drive System, also known as TDS, at the rear.

The name “Otonabee” comes from the Otonabee River in Canada, a river said to have been described by Indigenous people as “a river that flows like a beating heart.”

Powerful, fast, and full of life — the Otonabee 48 swims with that same heartbeat-like energy.

Features:
The Otonabee 48 is a sinking minnow that uses two sources of action:

  • A front lip
  • NLW’s proprietary Tail Drive System, or TDS

This combination creates an extremely high-pitch swimming action unlike that of ordinary minnows.

Action:
The Otonabee 48 has a wide usable speed range, from slow retrieves to high-speed retrieves.

When worked properly, it can generate a fast rolling action that resembles the spinning motion of a drill — this is what NLW calls the Drill Roll Action.

What is the Drill Roll?

Unlike a standard minnow plug, the Otonabee 48 uses its TDS to catch water when twitched or otherwise worked with rod input, producing an exceptionally fast rolling action.

This gives the lure a very special characteristic:

  • It can create intense flashing and rolling action
  • Even while moving forward very slowly
  • Almost as if it were hovering in place

It may take a little practice to master, but the Drill Roll can be triggered with a slightly stronger shaking retrieve, somewhat similar to a more aggressive mid-strolling style retrieve.

Hook Setting Options:
The Otonabee 48 comes equipped with one treble hook on the tail as sold, which is the setup that makes the Drill Roll easiest to produce.

However, you can also adjust the hook setup depending on your fishing style or conditions:

  • Add a second treble hook to the belly when fish often strike upward from below
  • Use one or two single hooks for different applications or hook preferences

This gives anglers the flexibility to fine-tune the lure to suit different situations.
